Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a teenager when her father who was employed as a carnival barker died. The mother of the family had to take on jobs including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was raised in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. Following only two school years, Ruth left to pursue an acting profession. Her path did not come without challenges. When she was in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills in crime magazines. acting work she longed for was not available. When she was employed as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit her job and moved back to Boston. She was in Boston where she worked during the evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time, was an usherette. She also graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
